Charleston is “Going Green” everywhere you look. Why not “Eat Green” too? The Sprout is the only restaurant in the area that can claim a 100% organic and healthy menu with vegetarian, vegan and raw options packaged using biodegradable containers. Chef Mickey and his wife Caroline Brennan opened The Sprout to ultimately raise the level of the health of the world utilizing eco-friendly practices in the selection and preparation of the nutrient-rich, life-sustaining food and smoothies they serve. Not limited to just the food, The Sprout uses green materials whenever possible. The flooring is made of concrete with natural sealant, the paint used is a Sherwin Williams green product, the lights are compact fluorescents lighting up the 1500 square foot Deli-Cafe and the counter tops are constructed from a mixture of recycled concrete, granite and glass. Serving containers are made from corn oil, utensils and cups from sugarcane that are compostable. Napkins and the menus are made from recycled paper, the latter printed with soy ink. The bags for carry-out are reused grocery bags. Recycling containers are set out for customers and all food scraps are composted. All cleaning products, from dishwashing soap to disinfectants, are green alternatives.
The ready-to-go menu consists of seasonal offerings made from 100% organic fruits and vegetables which are locally grown whenever possible and prepared by Chef/co-owner Mickey Brennan who brings to the kitchen culinary experiences ranging from the conventional to five-star organic. Breakfast choices include live granola; breakfast quinoa; and made to order smoothies and fresh juices. Portobello, ginger infused vegetable nut patty on a sprouted bun stacked with veggies is one of the most popular lunch items. Dinner choices range from a zucchini and squash pasta with a Thai flavor to Sun Burritos, a rainbow chard wrap with sunflower sprout filling. All menu items are ready to grab and go from the cooler to eat in or take home.
The Juice Bar menu is extensive, serving protein, specialty and fruit smoothies. For the coffee lovers we serve Charleston Organic Coffee and espresso drinks. Fresh juices include many diverse choices from “The Carmen” made with apples, oranges, kale and ginger to “Alkaline Battery” with celery, kale and parsley or you can create your own. For the wine connoisseurs The Sprout sells organic, biodynamic and terra vitis wines from all around the world. Wheatgrass shots are also a specialty at The Sprout.
